Memories of the Grey Friars

Alan Skinner, together with our own Joan Gurney (Appleton 1938-51), has sent details of events being held this summer which will interest many Old Girls.

    *  Tuesday 6 June at 7.30pm: Lecture on the History of Adult Education in Colchester, with update on the Grey Friars History Project. Friends of the Museums, Lion Walk. Non-members welcome £3.

    *  Friday 23 June 2pm to 8pm: Exhibition, hands-on artifacts, documents from the Grey Friars History Project at Firstsite, Education room. Free entry.

     *  The Grey Friars Hotel will take part in the Heritage Open Weekend this year on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th September 2017, 10am to 5pm each day. The charity, “Learning Never Stops”, has generously been given a room on the ground floor, and Alan Skinner and Joan Gurney will be in attendance with other trustees of the charity to host an exhibition of pictures and other artefacts, showing the early history of the site, and the story of Grey Friars, its architecture and its occupants from 1755 through to the C21st. Colchester County High School for Girls, the Adult Community College and the conversion to the present hotel, will all feature.
