Eileen Warner (Marshall) and June Todhunter (Michell)

Ruth Greenwold (Motum, 1941-48) writes:

My dear friends. Betty and June - these two ladies were at CCHS in the 1930s but have recently passed away.  Eileen (Betty) died on 23rd April and June on 30th June.  They knew each other because, between 2004 and 2010, we three joined the Colchester Ladies Lunch Club, held in St Giles Church, and later at the George Hotel, High Street, Colchester.

Betty (left) started school at St John’s Green primary, followed by her CCHS years.

After leaving she became a Post Office Telephonist.  She married Jack Warner and had three children.  She loved her family, nature, wildlife and donkeys, supporting the Devon Donkey Sanctuary.  She and Jack worshipped at St Botolph’s Church.  She was a very good cook and they spent many happy years living in Magazine Farm Way.

Jack died, in 2012, after 60 years of marriage to Betty.  Not long after, Betty moved to Springfields Residential Home, at Copford, and seven years later, passed away, at 95 years old.

June (right) was born at West Mersea and after her CCHS years worked in the Army Department of the Civil Service.

She married Denis in 1953, and they also lived in Magazine Farm Way, before moving to a house near Lockhart Avenue, Lexden.  Like Betty,

June loved the wild birds in her garden, but also she loved music, and played the piano.  At a Strauss concert, she was to conduct the orchestra, and did this for the “Treasure Waltz”.

She loved to play tennis and watch Wimbledon matches on TV.

She went into a care home in 2016 where she passed away aged 93 years.

My dear friends are gone, but many happy memories remain.
