Laura Stephens (2010-2013)

Although Laura was not at CCHS for many years she is one who has helped to put us on the map. Having won a gold medal (butterfly stroke) at the Swim England National Winter Championships, she went on to represent England in the swimming team to compete at the recent Commonwealth Games, on the Gold Coast, in Australia. She left the school to attend boarding school and train with the famous Plymouth Leander Swimming Club and has gone from strength to strength. However, it was not an easy passage, especially the challenge of balancing swimming with schoolwork, especially whilst
doing her ‘A’ levels and having to get up at 5am to train. She used to receive funding from British Swimming but this has now dried up and her parents are bearing the burden - not an easy task when a race swimsuit costs £300 - £400 and only lasts a short time.
Laura made it to the finals of the 200m Butterfly race at the Commonwealth Games in Australia’s Gold Coast. She did well but was not a medal winner.
