Heritage Open Weekends 2018

Joan Gurney (Appleton 1938-51)

Once again the Grey Friars Hotel was part of the Heritage Open Weekends on 8th/9th and 15th/16th September 2018.  Organised jointly by the Management Team at the hotel and the charity ‘Learning Never Stops’, the latter was generously given a room on the ground floor where an exhibition was set up showing the history of the Grey Friars site, and the previous occupants of the 1755 house including CCHS and the Adult Community College.  Grey Friars books were available and there were always people around to answer questions and share memories.

The weather was fine throughout the four days and approximately 270 people attended in total.  These included several CCHS alumnae and a number of former students of the Adult Community College.  Many had travelled a long way to be there and one gentleman even came from Buenos Aires.

Alan Skinner conducted guided walks ar4ound the former Grey Friars estate, each followed by a tour of the refurbished hotel building escorted by a member of their staff.  All sixteen walks and tours were fully booked and the feedback from every aspect of the weekends was very positive.  Book this in your diary for September 2019.  It is an enjoyable experience full of nostalgia, and if you get tired, you can always stop for refreshments.  Everything else is free.

Apologies to Joan - there was insufficient space to print her interesting article on the School Halls of Grey Friars and North Hill.  This will be included in the Autumn 2019 issue of the CCHS OGA Newsletter.
