On 28th February, Owen Teale, best known for his role as Alliser Thorne in TV show Game of Thrones came to CCHSG to talk to our English Literature A Level students.
One of our topics in English covers the play “A Doll’s House”, by Henrik Ibsen, published in 1879. Owen Teale played one of the main characters, Torvald Helmer in Anthony Page’s 1996 production of “A Doll’s House”, which debuted in the West End and then progressed onto Broadway in April of 1997. For this role, Teale won a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play. He gave us insights into how he developed the character of Torvald, while also sharing funny stories of productions and his own thoughts and feelings about the play itself, as well as its characters.

Students had the opportunity to ask questions about his experiences and he responded with very thoughtful answers, expressing his interest in our studies. We had many interesting topics of discussion, one of which was debating whether Kristine was in the wrong for allowing Helmer to find out about the forgery, when Nora had been nothing but a good friend to her. His insight gave us all some good critical quotes for the character of Helmer, while also allowing us to understand the character more in depth.
Special thanks go to Miss Watling for organising this opportunity.
